Charlie's & Nancy's Story

My name is Austin, I'm Nancy's neighbor, and I want to tell you her story.

Nancy is 72 years old. Three years ago, her husband Jack passed away. Her son Derek moved to Europe. The only family she has left is Charlie. A 7-year-old beagle who became her entire world.

Nancy has arthritis in her hands that flares when she grips things or repeats small motions. Her fingers get stiff and swollen by midday. She also has chronic lower back pain that makes sitting and standing difficult.

Life hasn't been easy for her. But the way she loved that dog, the way they moved through their days together, it was clear Charlie wasn't just a pet. He was her family. Her best friend. The one who showed up when everyone else left.

They sleep in the same bed. They spend evenings curled up together in front of the TV. She splits her dinner with him without a second thought.

Two weeks ago, Charlie was diagnosed with lymphoma. The cancer attacks his immune system.

He's tired all the time, eating less, losing weight.

The vet said chemotherapy could give Charlie many more healthy years. But it costs $8,186.08. Money Nancy doesn't have on her social security checks.

Most people would have given up. Nancy decided to fight.

Every morning, despite the arthritis and the back pain, she sits down and makes bracelets. One by one. By hand. Not asking for handouts. Making something with her own hands.
